ABOUT THE FILM

The Making Of A Documentary

lgbt_documentaryWhy would someone choose to be gay? And why would they do it in Kansas, a state notoriously tough on gay people?

That was the driving force behind Out Here In Kansas, the directorial debut of longtime journalist Adam Knapp. In the 32-minute documentary, Knapp explores the tumultuous relationship between Christians and the LGBT community.

The documentary centers around three people:
      • Burt Humburg, a fundamentalist Christian who realized he was gay as he was winding up his career as an All-American football player.
      • Joe Wright, Burt and Adam's former pastor, who was instrumental in making gay marriage illegal in Kansas.
      • Adam Knapp himself, who felt God put him in a unique position to seek answers from the polar opposites and tell their story.

Knapp arranged for Humburg and Wright to have a discussion. It was the first time they'd interacted in nearly 20 years. In the meantime, Knapp unexpectedly became part of the story. You can watch the trailer here.

This barn in beautiful Greenwood County has been in our family since before I was born. It is a neat old barn, but I can never remember it actually being used...until now. Find out more.

A Successful Test Screening
Out Here In Kansas had a handful of non-promoted test screenings at the Doc Sunback Film Festival in Mulvane. One of the screenings included my parents. It was the first time anyone from my family had seen the film. Find out how it turned out.

  • “A thoughtful debate about sexuality and religion that shows us how to agree to disagree without demonizing.”

  • “Thanks for sharing your talent and great movie. #OutHereInKansas.”

    KYLE STEADMAN
  • “A powerful, well-crafted film with national relevance.”

  • “This movie is a conversation about being out everyone is afraid to have. Remarkable!”

  • “This movie sheds light on the troubles and misunderstandings of what God said, Love thy neighbor like thyself.”

    JACK DUTRA
  • “I began to watch Out here in Kansas as a mother wanting to hug each and everyone that stepped forward and asked to be heard. The video is a risk for many in telling their own story, but the risk is put in motion to let these stories help future conversations begin on a higher note.”

    JUDY DUTRA
  • “This is an important film , and should be seen by anyone who has questions about homosexuality and religion. Thought-provoking, well-crafted, and unexpectedly insightful. A debut directional tour de force.”
